Prominent ears are usually caused by natural differences in the development of the ear cartilage, causing the ears to project farther from the head. The condition is often present from birth and becomes more noticeable as a child grows.

Treatment involves otoplasty, during which the surgeon makes an incision behind the ear, reshapes or removes cartilage as needed and secures the ear closer to the head with sutures.
