Cholesterol accumulates and forms stones in the gallbladder. These stones may be small, like sand, or large. They do not cause problems in the gallbladder unless they block the bile duct. The disease is more common among women and the elderly. This disease is accompanied by pain in the upper abdomen on the right side, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and yellowing of the whites of the eyes.
Excess weight and obesity.
High levels of certain types of fat.
Multiple pregnancies in women.
Prolonged use of female hormones or birth control pills.
Strict dieting may cause gallstones.
