Description

Some women may occasionally opt for breast augmentation surgery, either for cosmetic reasons or as part of a medical procedure. Breast augmentation—also known as augmentative mammoplasty—is a surgical procedure to increase breast size. It involves placing breast implants under the breast tissue or pectoral muscles.

For some women, breast augmentation is simply a way to feel more confident. For others, it's part of breast reconstruction for various reasons.

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, consult with a plastic surgeon. Also, be sure you understand what the surgery involves, including the potential risks and complications, and the necessary follow-up care.

Breast augmentation with silicone implants

This is a simple surgical procedure performed in a hospital under general anesthesia.

There are no side effects.

There are no side effects if the woman is breastfeeding or will breastfeed in the future.

It does not affect the milk ducts in the body.

The results are excellent and immediate, appearing right after the procedure.

Your doctor will make a single incision to insert the breast implant in one of three locations: the crease under the breast (subbreast), under the arm (axillary), or around the nipple (periatal). After making this incision, the surgeon will separate the breast tissue from the chest muscles and connective tissue. This creates a pocket behind or in front of the external chest wall muscle (pectoralis major). The surgeon will insert the implant into this pocket, positioning it behind the nipple.

Saline implants are inserted empty and then filled with sterile saline solution immediately after placement. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel.

After the implant is in place, the surgeon will close the incision—usually with sutures—and bandage it with a skin adhesive.

You will discuss your preferences regarding breast size, texture, and appearance with a plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will prescribe specific types of implants—smooth or granular, round or teardrop, saline or silicone—as well as available surgical techniques.

You may need an initial mammogram before your surgery. Your doctor may also adjust certain medications before the procedure. For example, you should avoid taking aspirin or other medications that can increase bleeding.

If you smoke, your surgeon will ask you to stop smoking for a specific period—usually four to six weeks before and after surgery.

You will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least the first night.

The price will be determined after the doctor's examination at the clinic.
