What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the breasts to achieve a smaller size that is more proportionate to the rest of the body. This alleviates the discomfort associated with excessively large breasts (gynecomastia).

Who are candidates for breast reduction surgery?

It is possible for breasts to be large but in proportion to the rest of the body and not cause any problems. However, excessively large breasts can also cause several problems, which can be categorized as follows:

Psychological problems:

Disproportionately large breasts can cause psychological distress for patients and hinder their ability to lead a normal life.

Physical and health problems:

Large breasts can cause pain in various parts of the body, such as the back, neck, and shoulders, making it difficult for some patients to perform common physical activities. Breast reduction surgery can also be performed on men who suffer from a condition called gynecomastia, in which there is a significant increase in breast size.

What are the different techniques used in breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction via liposuction:

This method can be used in some cases for women with slightly larger breasts, provided the skin has sufficient elasticity and can return to its natural shape after liposuction. The procedure involves making a small incision in the skin to insert a thin cannula to suction out fat and fluids from the breast.

Breast reduction via surgical incision:

In this technique, the surgeon makes an incision in the skin around the nipple or under the breast to remove excess fat and tissue. The surgeon may also reposition and lift the nipple and areola if the breast is significantly sagging, while preserving the blood and nerve supply to the breast.
